Statistics, Data Science, and Computing for the Environment and Climate Change: Contributions from LACSC-TIES-EnviBayes-EnvrASA 2026

The 2026 conference of The International Environmetrics Society (TIES) will be held in Mexico City, Mexico, from December 7 to 11, 2026. TIES conferences exist to advance the theory, methods, and practice of statistical and computational approaches applied to environmental studies, ecological systems, and human health, and this edition continues that mission on an unusually broad, multi-society footing.

This year, for the first time, TIES is being organized jointly with the Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México (UNAM), the Mexican Association of Statistics (AME), the Latin American Conference on Statistical Computing (LACSC), the Section on Environmental Sciences of the International Society for Bayesian Analysis (EnviBayes – ISBA), and the Section on Statistics and the Environment of the American Statistical Association (ENVR-ASA). The resulting event: LACSC-TIES-EnviBayes-EnvrASA 2026,  is designed to strengthen applied and computational statistics research in Latin America, to promote work on environmental and climate-change problems of particular regional relevance, and to foster collaboration across disciplinary and institutional boundaries (conference website: https://www.amestad.mx/lacsc-ties-envibayes-envrasa-2026).

The response to the call for abstracts has been very strong. The conference has received 200 high-quality abstracts spanning environmental, climate change, and ecological statistics, with approaches based on spatial and spatio-temporal modeling, Bayesian methods, statistical computing, and data science. This volume and quality of work, along with the conference’s clear goal to connect international and Latin American research communities, create a timely opportunity for a Special Issue that showcases these contributions for a global audience.

Submission Instructions

This Special Issue welcomes original contributions at the interface of statistics, data science, and computing applied to environmental and climate-change problems, with particular, though not exclusive, attention to challenges and data relevant to Latin America. Contributions arising as outputs from, or related to LACSC-TIES-EnviBayes-EnvrASA 2026 conference (Mexico City, December 7–11, 2026) are encouraged but open to the broader research community working in these areas. Suggested topics include spatial and spatio-temporal modeling, Bayesian methods for environmental risk, climate change detection and attribution, ecological statistics, environmental epidemiology, extreme value theory, water resources statistics, and statistical computing for large environmental data sets, among others.

Manuscripts must follow the standard JAS: ESDS “Instructions for Authors” and be submitted before the 30 of April, 2027.

All manuscripts must be submitted electronically through the journal's Submission Portal.
The special issue title "Statistics, Data Science, and Computing for the Environment and Climate Change: Contributions from LACSC-TIES-EnviBayes-EnvrASA 2026" must be selected at the "Manuscript" stage of the process in answer to the "Are you submitting your paper for a specific special issue or article collection?" question, and in the cover letter to the chief editor.
If the submitted paper extends work already presented as a conference abstract at LACSC-TIES-EnviBayes-EnvrASA 2026, please state this in the cover letter, along with a clear description of what is new relative to the abstract.
