Benefits of Publishing in an Article Collection
An Article Collection is an opportunity for your research to reach the right audience. Bringing together the work of the global research community, Collections provide readers with a central place to find the latest research on emerging and important topics. They have been found to increase the discoverability and visibility of each article, as well as article-level citations.
Protein Summit 3.0: Protein’s Role in Public Health: A Scientific Dialogue
Since the inaugural Protein Summit, the evidence base demonstrating dietary protein contributes to metabolic health, muscle and bone integrity, and chronic disease risk reduction, has significantly expanded over the last 2 decades.
The Protein Summit series, a time honored and enduring foundation of dietary protein’s significance to human health, began in 2007 when 52 internationally recognized experts explored scientific evidence for dietary protein's role in promoting health with regard for protein quantity and quality. Consensus areas and future directions were provided for protein’s role in weight management, sarcopenia, bone health, heart disease and diabetes, and optimal health.
In 2013, over 60 scientists and allied health professionals assembled at Protein Summit 2.0 to explore dietary protein's role in weight management, metabolic health, and healthy aging. Expert attendees agreed that investigations examining protein intake ranges across life stages, in the context of different health conditions, and regarding protein quality, meal protein targets and timing of protein intake related to functional outcomes were warranted.
Protein Summit 3.0 was designed to address unresolved questions from prior Protein Summits, including intake ranges for specific health outcomes based on a systematic examination of the respective evidence, the appropriate framework for evaluating protein quality, and the role of protein source in nutrient adequacy and to advance scientific inquiry to inform future evidence-based recommendations. The potential for a Chronic Disease Risk Reduction (CDRR) intake level for protein also emerged during various deliberations. This meeting addressed current gaps in dietary protein guidance, considered evidence for the role of dietary protein in the areas of weight management, diet quality, cardiovascular-kidney-metabolic and musculoskeletal health, and challenged participants to identify novel and creative approaches to further the role of protein science in public health initiatives.
