Benefits of Publishing in an Article Collection

An Article Collection is an opportunity for your research to reach the right audience. Bringing together the work of the global research community, Collections provide readers with a central place to find the latest research on emerging and important topics. They have been found to increase the discoverability and visibility of each article, as well as article-level citations.

One Health Promotes Life-course Neurointerventions

The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), the United Nations Environment Program (UNEP), the World Organization for Animal Health (WOAH, founded as OIE), and the World Health Organization (WHO) have collaborated to develop plans to mitigate the impact of current and future health challenges at the human–animal– plant–environment interface using strategic foresight. These efforts require global, national, regional and community efforts by applying interdisciplinary and transdisciplinary collaborations. Future pandemics and polycrises can be prevented or mitigated to promote health sustainability through the One Health approach. This quadripartite strategy will be applicable to preserve or restore life-course brain health, beginning with girls and women.

One Health strategies can effectively address worldwide polycrises and pandemics that contribute to neurologic and mental health disorders. Proactive and reactive neuroinventions integrate healthcare pathways for humans, animals, the climate and ecosystems across the lifespan. Menarche to menopause constitutes matresence during which one or multiple pregnancies have One Health relevance for women, with transgenerational effects on their children. Reproductive and pregnancy wellness for women and their partners initiate each person’s life-course brain health. Fetal brain diseases potentially occur during trimester-specific adverse interactions that impair the maternal-placental-fetal triad. Gene-environment interactions may be recognized during prenatal and neonatal life for the symptomatic minority. Unrecognized prenatal disease processes more likely will express neurologic and mental health disorders initially over the first 1000 days. Healthy metaplasticity or neurodegenerative processes will subsequently predominate across the person’s lifetime. Preventive, rescue and reparative brain health interventions require transdisciplinary choices by all stakeholders. Intersectoral factors will influence healthcare decisions specific to low-middle income and high-income nations particularly in healthcare deserts.

Overarching Topics

  • Intersectionality with cultural neuroscience knowledge promote transdisciplinary care
  • Connecting knowledge siloes strengthen interdisciplinary interventions
  • Strategic foresight applies the science of uncertainty to strengthen critical thinking
  • Causal inference methodologies identify mediator, moderator and confounding factors
  • Neurohumanities emphasize personalized life-course behavioral expressions
  • AI with machine learning promote life-course brain health pathways

Discipline-specific Topics

  • Reproductive-pregnancy innovations improve proactive-reactive neurointerventions
  • Maternal-placental-fetal triad interactions mitigate or promote disease pathways
  • Interdisciplinary databases identify relevant epidemiologic population factors
  • Peripartum-neonatal neurocritical care addresses the symptomatic minority
  • Genetic-epigenetic tools detect impaired gene-environment interactions affecting the unrecognized majority

  • Multi-systemic physiologic monitoring considers neonatal disease pathways associated with encephalopathy, seizures, stroke, and brain disorders associated with prematurity
  • Pre-school assessment advancements identify children with gifted-special education-neurorehabilitative features
  • Sustain neurologic-mental health interventions through adolescence into adulthood
  • Promote healthcare-educational strategies for successful employment and quality of life
  • Neurologic-mental health providers require subspecialty and wellness partnerships
