Benefits of Publishing in an Article Collection

An Article Collection is an opportunity for your research to reach the right audience. Bringing together the work of the global research community, Collections provide readers with a central place to find the latest research on emerging and important topics. They have been found to increase the discoverability and visibility of each article, as well as article-level citations.

Cell Death Driven Inflammation and Resolution: Mechanisms and Therapeutic Targeting

The Journal of Inflammation Research is pleased to welcome you to submit your research to the Article Collection "Cell Death Driven Inflammation and Resolution: Mechanisms and Therapeutic Targeting".

Regulated cell death shapes inflammation through the release of cytokines, extracellular nucleotides, oxidized lipids and other damage associated signals. Pyroptosis, ferroptosis, necroptosis and apoptosis have distinct molecular programmes, yet their consequences depend on the dying cell, the surrounding immune cells and the efficiency of clearance. These processes can support antimicrobial defence and tissue homeostasis, but may also amplify inflammatory injury when dysregulated. Efferocytosis and subsequent reprogramming of phagocytes provide a connection between cell death, inflammatory resolution and tissue repair.

Understanding when cell death drives injury or promotes resolution is essential for developing interventions that preserve host defence while limiting tissue damage. This question is relevant to sepsis, acute organ injury and chronic inflammatory disorders. Therapeutic targeting requires causal evidence linking death pathway regulation to inflammatory mediators, immune cell behaviour and disease outcomes. The Collection will bring together molecular, cellular and translational perspectives to examine these relationships, identify context dependent therapeutic opportunities and address how timing, cell type and tissue environment influence the effects of intervention.

We welcome original experimental and translational research and focused reviews on inflammasome, caspase and gasdermin pathways; ferroptosis associated lipid peroxidation and innate immunity; necroptosis and its interaction with other death programmes; extracellular ATP, purinergic receptors and nucleotide metabolism; damage associated signals released by dying cells; efferocytosis, proresolving mediators and tissue repair; and genetic or pharmacological targeting of these mechanisms. Particular interest will be given to studies that establish functional links between a defined cell death pathway, inflammatory responses and tissue outcomes. Infection associated and sterile inflammatory disease models are welcome. Cancer studies should address inflammation as a central mechanistic question. Mechanistic validation and clinically relevant experimental models are encouraged.

Meet the Guest Advisors

Prof. Dr. Zui Zou, MD, PhD, is a Professor and Chief Physician in the Department of Anesthesiology at Changhai Hospital, Naval Medical University, Shanghai, China. His research focuses on regulated cell death and inflammatory signalling, particularly pyroptosis, ferroptosis and innate immune responses. He investigates these mechanisms in sepsis, organ injury and cancer. His work connects gasdermin biology and the molecular regulation of cell death with translational questions in critical care and tumour immunology.

Prof. Doblin Sandai, PhD, is an Associate Professor in the Department of Biomedical Sciences, Advanced Medical and Dental Institute, Universiti Sains Malaysia. He obtained his PhD at the University of Aberdeen, United Kingdom. His research interests include molecular medical mycology, host–pathogen interactions and biotechnology. His publications also address ATP associated cell death and experimental anticancer approaches, providing complementary expertise in the relationship between cellular stress, infection and inflammatory responses.
