Navigating New Frontiers of Economic and Financial Crime
Economic and financial crime — spanning corruption, money laundering, tax evasion, the shadow economy, and corporate fraud — remains one of the most persistent threats to economic stability and sustainable development worldwide. As financial systems become increasingly digitized and interconnected, criminal actors exploit new technological vectors, from cryptocurrencies to AI-enabled fraud schemes, while regulators and researchers race to develop equally sophisticated detection and prevention tools. This Article Collection for the Journal of Applied Economics invites rigorous empirical, theoretical, and policy-oriented contributions examining the drivers, consequences, and countermeasures of economic and financial crime across national and cross-country contexts. We particularly welcome research that bridges finance, governance, and technology, exploring how institutional quality, corporate governance, and technological innovation shape the incidence and mitigation of financial crime, and how these dynamics interact with broader sustainable development objectives in both developed and emerging economies.
Financial crime imposes enormous direct and indirect costs on economies, eroding public trust, distorting markets, weakening tax revenues, and undermining sustainable development goals. The shadow economy alone represents a substantial share of GDP in many countries, while corruption and money laundering continue to divert resources from productive investment. The rise of cryptocurrencies, decentralized finance, and generative AI has opened new channels for illicit activity, while geopolitical shocks and climate-related risks are reshaping global financial crime patterns in ways not yet fully understood. Although emerging evidence indicates that institutional quality and technological capacity significantly moderate the incidence and impact of financial crime, these relationships remain empirically underexplored, especially across emerging-market and cross-country settings. Understanding how AI and regulatory innovation can simultaneously enable and combat financial crime is critical for policymakers and international bodies designing more resilient economic systems. This Collection aims to generate policy-relevant insights that advance both academic understanding and practical responses to this fast-evolving challenge.
This Collection welcomes submissions on topics including (but not limited to): the shadow economy, corruption, and money laundering typologies in an increasingly digitized financial system; corporate fraud and bankruptcy/failure prediction models, including AI- and machine-learning-based approaches; the role of corporate governance and institutional quality in preventing and mitigating financial crime; cryptocurrency, decentralized finance (DeFi), and crypto-asset-enabled financial crime; generative AI, deepfakes, and emerging cyber-enabled fraud schemes; RegTech, SupTech, and technology-driven compliance and detection tools; greenwashing and the intersection of financial crime with climate change and ESG performance; cross-country and panel-data analyses of institutional quality, digitalization, and financial crime; tax evasion, illicit financial flows, and fiscal policy interactions; and the impact of macroeconomic and geopolitical shocks (e.g., pandemics, sanctions, wars, energy crises) on financial crime patterns.
