Benefits of Publishing in an Article Collection

An Article Collection is an opportunity for your research to reach the right audience. Bringing together the work of the global research community, Collections provide readers with a central place to find the latest research on emerging and important topics. They have been found to increase the discoverability and visibility of each article, as well as article-level citations.

Geospatial Intelligence and Earth Observation for Climate Extremes Resilience in the Global South

The Global South is disproportionately exposed to intensifying climate extremes, including tropical cyclones, flash floods, severe drought, and heatwaves. Understanding the dynamics, patterns, and evolution of these extreme events is of the utmost necessity as they directly jeopardize the food and water security of billions of people living in these regions. We therefore require a deeper understanding of these extreme weather events to build genuine adaptive and climate-resilient infrastructure to protect vulnerable populations. While traditional ground-based monitoring systems are often sparse in these regions, advances in GIScience, cloud computing, artificial intelligence, and satellite remote sensing offer unprecedented opportunities to monitor, model, and mitigate these extreme events.

This Article Collection aims to gather innovative research that utilizes advances in spatial analysis, machine learning, geospatial intelligence, and Earth observation to understand the underlying physical processes, spatiotemporal dynamics, and impacts of climate extremes in the Global South. It will also focus on assessing the community and environmental resilience of these events. We welcome studies that bridge the gap between these extreme events and their resilience and vulnerability mapping using robust geospatial workflows.

This Collection welcomes submissions utilizing innovative geospatial methodologies—including GeoAI, multi-sensor data fusion, and cloud computing—focused on, but not limited to, the following themes:

  • Multi-Sensor Fusion for Tropical Cyclone Impact Assessment
  • GeoAI and Deep Learning for Flash Flood Modeling
  • Spatiotemporal Monitoring of Severe Droughts and Agricultural Stress
  • Thermal Remote Sensing and Urban Heat Island (UHI) Dynamics
  • Extreme heatwaves and their vulnerability mapping
  • Integrating Earth Observation with Socio-Economic GIS Data for Vulnerability Mapping of Extreme Events
  • Compound and Cascading Extreme Weather Events
  • Cloud-Based Big Data Analytics for Long-Term Extreme Weather Events
  • Nature-Based Solutions (NbS) and Ecosystem-Based Adaptation Mapping of Extreme Events
  • Methods and techniques to prepare and adapt to other climatic risks
