Benefits of Publishing in an Article Collection
An Article Collection is an opportunity for your research to reach the right audience. Bringing together the work of the global research community, Collections provide readers with a central place to find the latest research on emerging and important topics. They have been found to increase the discoverability and visibility of each article, as well as article-level citations.
From Zeeman effect to quantum innovations: magnetism that shapes the future
Philosophical Magazine, with guest advisor Professor Ramamoorthy Ramesh of the University of California, Berkeley, is pleased to announce a new article collection dedicated to the field of magnetism and its wider applications.
Pieter Zeeman's discovery of spectral line splitting in magnetic fields, which earned him the 1902 Nobel Prize in Physics, has shaped more than a century of research in magnetism and quantum mechanics. The Zeeman effect - the splitting of spectral lines into multiple components in the presence of a static magnetic field - became fundamental to our understanding of atomic structure and electron behaviour.
From these quantum foundations, the field of magnetism has expanded dramatically with new phenomena and control over quantum states. For example, spin-charge coupling in multiferroics, emergent magnetic states, such as altermagnets and skyrmions, have great potential for energy-efficient data storage while new quantum materials such as Moiré systems and magnetic 2D materials enable precise engineering of magnetic properties. Alongside this, quantum information advances are enabling quantum computing, topological qubits, and quantum sensing applications. In addition, these magnetic discoveries are enabling advances in medical diagnostics and energy applications.
This article collection aims to showcase recent advancements across this dynamic field, from the fundamental physics underpinning new quantum phenomena and magnetism, to the diverse applications across the sciences and engineering.
Themes in scope for this collection include:
- Spin-charge coupling in multiferroic magnets
- Quantum information, sensing, and quantum computing applications
- Low-dimensional magnetism: 2D materials, van der Waals heterostructures, and nanoscale systems
- Spintronics, magnetic devices for energy efficient computing
- Topological magnetism and correlated quantum materials
- Medical and biomedical applications of magnetism
- Energy, materials, and engineering applications
Key Words:
Ferromagnetism, Spin-Orbit Coupling, Multiferroics, Paramagnetism, Magnetic Flux,
Manuscripts submitted to this Article Collection will undergo a full peer-review.
The deadline for submitting manuscripts is 28th December 2026.
When submitting your manuscript through the journal's submission portal, please select 'Article Collection: Zeeman' from the drop-down menu. For any questions, please contact George Russell at George.Russell@tandf.co.uk.
Meet the Guest Advisor
Professor Ramesh has made seminal contributions to the science and technology of complex correlated oxides using epitaxy as a pathway to create model systems. His pioneering fundamental work on ferroelectrics eliminated the 30-year problem of polarization fatigue through control of the electrode-ferroelectric interface. Control and manipulation of magnetism with electric fields, to enable a new generation of ultra-low power information storage and communication components for Beyond Moore’s Law electronics, is a science & technology grand challenge.
