Benefits of Publishing in an Article Collection

An Article Collection is an opportunity for your research to reach the right audience. Bringing together the work of the global research community, Collections provide readers with a central place to find the latest research on emerging and important topics. They have been found to increase the discoverability and visibility of each article, as well as article-level citations.

Commemorative article collection to honor Professor Robert B Meyer

Article Collection

Commemorative article collection to honor Professor Robert B Meyer, a founding father of modern liquid crystal science.

Robert B Meyer. Past Affiliation: Professor Emeritus of Physics, Physics Department, Brandeis University, Waltham, MA 02453, USA

Robert ‘Bob’ Meyer, Professor Emeritus of Physics at Brandeis University, passed away on November 17, 2023, at age 80. The liquid crystal community honored the scientific contributions of Bob Meyer at a special session during the 30th International Liquid Crystal Conference in Quebec City, Canada, June 21-26, 2026, at Université Laval, Québec City, Canada.

Bob combined deep theoretical insights with experimental creativity over a successful career spanning more than 50 years. Among his contributions are the prediction and discovery of flexoelectricity and ferroelectricity in liquid crystals, demonstration of field control of cholesteric liquid crystals, description of linear and point singularities, including the fundamental “escape into the third dimension” of the integer-strength disclinations, development of nanostructured and multistable substrates for alignment of nematics, description of unique elastic properties of polymer liquid crystals, preparation and exploration of ultrathin freely suspended films of smectics, development of viral dispersions as an experimental testing bed of the Onsager theory of orientational order, and development of a theory of piezoelectric effects in cholesteric gels and elastomers. Meyer’s research helped to establish the domain of soft matter science by demonstrating that common symmetry principles, orientational order, topological defects and underlying elastic, viscous, and field responsive mechanisms shape the properties of diverse materials, ranging from low-molecular weight thermotropic liquid crystals to colloidal dispersions, macromolecules, and biological materials.

Robert B. Meyer’s honors included the Benjamin Franklin Medal in Physics (2004), the Oliver E. Buckley Prize from the American Physical Society (2005), and the George W. Gray Medal of the British Liquid Crystal Society (2007).

The commemorative article collection aims to honor the legacy of Professor Robert B Meyer by publishing review articles on scientific advances inspired or initiated by Bob, in all areas of liquid crystal science.
