Benefits of Publishing in an Article Collection

An Article Collection is an opportunity for your research to reach the right audience. Bringing together the work of the global research community, Collections provide readers with a central place to find the latest research on emerging and important topics. They have been found to increase the discoverability and visibility of each article, as well as article-level citations.

Human-Centered AI for Mental Health: User Experience, Trust, and Behavioral Implications

Artificial Intelligence (AI) technologies are rapidly becoming integrated into mental health contexts through conversational agents, generative AI systems, digital therapeutics, and decision-support tools. These technologies promise to expand access to psychological support, reduce barriers to care, and provide scalable mental health interventions. At the same time, the growing presence of AI in emotionally sensitive domains raises important questions about how individuals perceive, interact with, and rely on these systems.

This Article Collection focuses on the human behavioral dimensions of AI-enabled mental health technologies. Specifically, it seeks to examine how users experience AI systems designed for mental health support, how trust and emotional reliance develop in human–AI interactions, and how these technologies influence psychological well-being, help-seeking behaviors, and perceptions of care.

Rather than focusing exclusively on technical system performance, this Collection emphasizes human-centered perspectives, including user experience, behavioral responses, and psychological outcomes associated with AI-mediated mental health support. Contributions may examine how individuals interpret, adopt, trust, or resist AI systems in mental health contexts, as well as how these technologies shape human behavior, decision-making, and emotional support practices.

As generative AI and conversational agents become increasingly accessible, understanding their psychological and behavioral implications is critical for responsible innovation. This Article Collection aims to bring together interdisciplinary research from psychology, human–computer interaction, digital health, and behavioral science to better understand the role of AI in shaping contemporary mental health support.

We welcome original empirical studies (qualitative, quantitative, or mixed methods), scoping reviews, theoretical and conceptual contributions, design research and prototype evaluations, ethical and policy analyses, and methodological papers. Submissions should clearly outline the behavioral, psychological, and societal implications of AI-enabled mental health technologies.

This Call for Papers targets interdisciplinary researchers and practitioners in:

  • Human–Computer Interaction (HCI)
  • Clinical Psychology and Psychiatry
  • Digital Health and Health Informatics
  • Artificial Intelligence and Data Science
  • Ethics, Science & Technology Studies, and Policy
  • Behavioral Health and Counselling

The Collection is particularly relevant to scholars working on conversational agents, generative AI, digital therapeutics, youth mental health, and culturally responsive AI systems.
