Benefits of Publishing in an Article Collection
An Article Collection is an opportunity for your research to reach the right audience. Bringing together the work of the global research community, Collections provide readers with a central place to find the latest research on emerging and important topics. They have been found to increase the discoverability and visibility of each article, as well as article-level citations.
Causes and Consequences of Tuberculosis Care Delays
Globally, 8.3 million people were reported as newly diagnosed with tuberculosis (TB). Reducing the burden of TB disease requires improvements in the coverage of diagnostics, treatments, and preventive interventions. It also necessitates action on broader determinants that drive new infections or increase the risk of developing the disease after infection, along with the development of a new TB vaccine.
Determinants that drive new infections are significantly affected by delays in seeking TB care. Several factors contribute to these delays, such as individual and cultural barriers, financial constraints, logistical challenges, structural obstacles, and issues related to providers and healthcare systems. Research has highlighted the existence of delays preceding TB diagnosis and the late commencement of treatment for both drug-susceptible and drug-resistant TB.
Delays in TB diagnosis and initiation of treatment significantly contribute to on-going transmission, poor clinical outcomes, and increased patient and healthcare costs. Factors influencing TB care delays include an individual's perceptions, socioeconomic status, stigma, and level of awareness, as well as geographical and health system-related barriers.
Although progress has been made in reducing delays in TB diagnosis and treatment, significant disparities continue to pose challenges for both patients and healthcare facilities. Additionally, the consequences of TB care delays, particularly in terms of morbidity, mortality, and costs for both patients and healthcare providers require further exploration. Such data allows understanding context-specific as well as common challenges across countries that will be utilized to inform possible potential specific interventions that need to be prioritized.
The topic will address the factors contributing to delays in seeking care for TB and the associated consequences. It encourages exploration of extra pulmonary and drug-resistant TB. Original articles that investigate the determinants of TB care-seeking delays and their impacts on clinical outcomes and economic evaluations will be considered. Qualitative studies that offer additional insights into the perspectives of patients and healthcare providers will also be considered.
