Benefits of Publishing in an Article Collection

An Article Collection is an opportunity for your research to reach the right audience. Bringing together the work of the global research community, Collections provide readers with a central place to find the latest research on emerging and important topics. They have been found to increase the discoverability and visibility of each article, as well as article-level citations.

Antiviral Drugs and Resistance to RNA Viruses

The existing and newly emerged viruses cause acute, persistent (latent and chronic) and transformative infections in humans that cause various viral diseases. These diseases impose a significant burden on global public health. The antiviral drugs have been approved and are available to reduce the burden of diseases caused by some existing human viruses. In addition, antiviral drugs are the first line of defence against novel viruses emerging in the human population and causing viral disease outbreaks and pandemics. Broadly, antiviral drugs are of two types: host-directed and virus-directed, which target the host components and viral components, respectively, critically involved in virus life cycle.

Antiviral drugs are available against only a few human viruses, e.g., HIV, Hepatitis B virus, Hepatitis C virus, Influenza virus, Herpesvirus, Sars coronavirus-2. Furthermore, the virus-directed antiviral drugs against RNA viruses, like HIV, Influenza, Hepatitis C, and Sars coronavirus-2 lose their efficacy quickly and eventually become obsolete due to these viruses acquiring drug-resistant mutations in the targeted viral components. One of the reasons for acquiring such quick resistance is the lack of 3’-5’ proof reading capability in viral RNA-dependent RNA polymerase. Therefore, there is an ongoing need to continuously monitor and improve the efficacy of existing virus-directed drugs as well as develop new drugs against RNA viruses. In addition, there is a need to delineate RNA virus-host cell interactions to identify novel host targets to develop host-directed antiviral drugs against RNA viruses. An advantage of the latter is that viruses are slow in acquiring the resistance to host-directed antiviral drugs.

The articles describing original research, reviews, commentary, and clinical studies are invited on research, development, efficacy, formulation, and resistance of antiviral drugs against human RNA viruses such as, but not limited to, influenza virus, Sars coronavirus-2, Respiratory syncytial virus, HIV, and hepatitis C virus.
