Benefits of Publishing in an Article Collection

An Article Collection is an opportunity for your research to reach the right audience. Bringing together the work of the global research community, Collections provide readers with a central place to find the latest research on emerging and important topics. They have been found to increase the discoverability and visibility of each article, as well as article-level citations.

Natural Hazards and Terrestrial Ecosystem Resilience for SDG 13 & SDG 15

The global challenge of achieving SDG 13 (Climate Action) and SDG 15 (Life on Land) remains one of humanity's most pressing concerns. SDG 13 aims to take urgent action to combat climate change and its impacts. SDG 15 aims to protect, restore and promote sustainable use of terrestrial ecosystems, sustainably manage forests, combat desertification, and halt and reverse land degradation and halt biodiversity loss. The key aligned targets include SDG13.1 (strengthen resilience and adaptive capacity to climate-related hazards and natural disasters in all countries), SDG13.2 (integrate climate change measures into national policies, strategies and planning), SDG13.3 (improve education, awareness-raising and human and institutional capacity on climate change mitigation,  adaptation,  impact reduction and early warning), SDG15.1 (ensure the conservation,  restoration and sustainable use of terrestrial and inland freshwater ecosystems and their services, in particular forests, wetlands, mountains and drylands, in line with obligations under international agreements), SDG15.2 (promote the implementation of sustainable management of all types of forests, halt deforestation, restore degraded forests and substantially increase afforestation and reforestation globally), SDG15.3 (combat desertification, restore degraded land and soil, including land affected by desertification, drought and floods, and strive to achieve a land degradation-neutral world),  and SDG15.5 (take urgent and significant action to reduce the degradation of natural habitats, halt the loss of biodiversity and protect and prevent the extinction of threatened species).

To accelerate the achievement of these targets, All Earth welcomes submissions for an Article Collection focused on innovative interdisciplinary Earth science addressing linked SDG13–SDG15 challenges, with particular emphasis on compound climate extremes, cascading natural hazards, ecosystem-based adaptation, and integrated observation–modelling frameworks. Climate warming and terrestrial ecosystem decline operate as tightly coupled, mutually reinforcing planetary risks. Rising anthropogenic warming amplifies compound extremes: tropical cyclones, prolonged droughts, heatwaves, wildfires and intense rainfall. At the same time, habitat loss, land degradation and falling biodiversity weaken the natural regulatory capacity of land systems. This reduces their ability to buffer communities from hazards, sustain carbon sinks and stabilize local climates. However, natural hazard research and terrestrial ecological studies have traditionally remained discipline-separated, lacking effective interdisciplinary integration.. This collection bridges that divide, uniting researchers to unpack coupled climate–hazard–ecosystem dynamics under ongoing global change.

Better understanding the links between climate extremes, cascading hazards and ecosystem resilience is essential to deliver on the 2030 SDG agenda. Degraded land amplifies disaster losses while eroding natural climate mitigation potential. Healthy, restored ecosystems, by contrast, offer practical, locally rooted nature-based solutions for risk reduction. Integrated research here directly feeds operational early warning, restoration planning, forest management and climate adaptation, especially in vulnerable regions. It also aligns naturally with All Earth’s mission: publishing integrative Earth system work that connects fundamental science to on-the ground risk reduction, fair sustainability and evidence-led governance.

We encourage submissions of articles on the subtopics:

  • Compound and cascading climate extremes (e.g., tropical cyclones, heavy rainfall, heat–flood interactions) and their cascading impacts on terrestrial ecosystems
  • Ecosystem-based adaptation and nature-based solutions for multi-hazard risk reduction and carbon mitigation
  • Integrated in-situ Observation, Remote sensing and Earth system modelling to link climate hazards, land degradation and biodiversity dynamics
  • Compound-risk early-warning frameworks and resilience metrics for coupled climate–ecosystem systems
  • Governance, environmental equity and stakeholder engagement to advance SDG13 and SDG15 implementation in vulnerable regions
  • Novel artificial intelligence and statistical frameworks for characterizing extremes, quantifying land degradation and assessing ecosystem services

Prof. Dr. Lei‑Ming Ma is a leading international expert in hydro‑meteorological hazards, whose research centers on tropical cyclone, extreme rainfall, physical parameterization, and artificial intelligence for high‑impact weather forecasting. His pioneering convective parameterization scheme has been officially adopted into the NCAR WRF modelling system (Version 3.3 and subsequent releases), serving as a foundational physical component for global multi‑scale rainfall simulation research. He has authored over 150 peer‑reviewed publications in high‑profile journals across AGU, AMS, EGU, IEEE and Nature Portfolio portfolios. He brings proven, end‑to‑end editorial governance experience for themed journal collections and scholarly book projects, with a long track‑record of assembling and managing large international author consortia to deliver high‑impact thematic publications.

Dr. Ghassem R. Asrar is a senior executive, accomplished leader, and highly regarded scientist with extensive experience managing scientific and technical programs spanning scientific exploration, modeling and data analysis, satellite technology development, Earth-human systems modeling, agricultural and food systems research, multidisciplinary research networks, and data and information systems. He is currently Executive Chair of the iCREST Foundation (iCREST FOUNDATION), which enables and empowers youth to become stewards and ambassadors for environmental resilience and sustainability.

Dr. Daniel E. Ibarra is currently the George H. Billings Assistant Professor of Earth, Environmental, and Planetary Sciences and Environment and Society at Brown University, and an affiliate Assistant Professor of Engineering. He also serves as the Director of Early Career Development and Training and was previously the Director of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion at the Institute at Brown for Environment and Society (IBES). As a biogeochemist and climate scientist, his research advances understanding of the coupled water and carbon cycles and how the Earth system responds to climate change, with work spanning the geologic record, modern river systems, field observations, and modeling. His group aims to deepen fundamental scientific knowledge while supporting applied solutions, including enhanced weathering strategies for permanent carbon dioxide removal and improved characterization of lithium resources critical to a sustainable energy transition.
