Benefits of Publishing in an Article Collection

An Article Collection is an opportunity for your research to reach the right audience. Bringing together the work of the global research community, Collections provide readers with a central place to find the latest research on emerging and important topics. They have been found to increase the discoverability and visibility of each article, as well as article-level citations.

Artificial Intelligence and Digital Innovation in Inflammatory Skin Diseases

Artificial intelligence (AI) is rapidly transforming dermatology by enabling the analysis of complex clinical, imaging, molecular, and patient-generated data. In inflammatory skin diseases, including psoriasis, atopic dermatitis, hidradenitis suppurativa, acne, rosacea, and other immune-mediated or inflammatory disorders, AI-based approaches have the potential to support diagnosis, disease classification, severity assessment, monitoring, and therapeutic decision-making. Machine learning, deep learning, computer vision, natural language processing, and emerging generative AI models are increasingly being investigated across multiple areas of dermatological care. At the same time, the growing availability of digital photography, dermoscopy, non-invasive imaging, electronic health records, wearable devices, and real-world datasets is creating new opportunities to develop data-driven tools capable of complementing clinical expertise and improving the characterization of complex and heterogeneous inflammatory skin conditions.

The relevance of AI in inflammatory dermatology extends beyond automated image recognition. These diseases are frequently chronic, relapsing, heterogeneous in presentation, and associated with variable treatment responses and substantial effects on quality of life. Their management often requires repeated assessment, long-term monitoring, and increasingly personalized therapeutic strategies. AI may help integrate multiple sources of information to identify disease phenotypes, predict clinical trajectories, estimate treatment response, detect early signs of relapse, and support more individualized management. Digital tools may also improve remote monitoring and facilitate patient engagement. However, important challenges remain, including dataset quality and representativeness, external validation, algorithmic bias, interpretability, privacy, ethical considerations, and integration into real-world clinical workflows. Addressing these issues is essential to move from promising experimental models toward clinically meaningful, safe, equitable, and generalizable applications.

This Article Collection aims to provide a comprehensive overview of current advances and future directions in the application of AI to inflammatory skin diseases. Topics of interest include, but are not limited to:

  • AI-assisted diagnosis and differential diagnosis
  • automated lesion detection, segmentation, and severity scoring
  • analysis of clinical, dermoscopic, and other non-invasive imaging data
  • prediction of disease progression, flares, comorbidities, and treatment response
  • precision medicine and therapeutic decision support
  • digital biomarkers and remote disease monitoring
  • multimodal data integration
  • large language models and generative AI in inflammatory dermatology
  • patient-facing digital tools
  • the ethical, methodological, regulatory, and implementation challenges associated with clinical translation

Original Research, Reviews, Systematic Reviews, and Perspectives addressing clinically relevant and methodologically robust applications are particularly welcome.
