Benefits of Publishing in an Article Collection
An Article Collection is an opportunity for your research to reach the right audience. Bringing together the work of the global research community, Collections provide readers with a central place to find the latest research on emerging and important topics. They have been found to increase the discoverability and visibility of each article, as well as article-level citations.
Research on Educational Innovations: Evidence, Practice, and Future Directions
Cogent Education is pleased to welcome you to submit your research to the Article Collection "Research on Educational Innovations: Evidence, Practice, and Future Directions".
This Article Collection examines established, emerging, and locally developed educational innovations through their theoretical foundations, research evidence, and implications for practice. An educational innovation is a new or adapted idea, practice, program, or structure introduced with the intention of improving teaching, learning, or the educational experience. The Collection draws on the analytical framework in Research on Educational Innovations, sixth edition, by Arthur K. Ellis, Leanna B. Aker, and David Wicks. Contributions distinguish three levels of research: theory and foundational research; empirical research and pilots; and implementation and evaluation at scale. Each article will define an innovation, trace its development, explain its features and intended outcomes, and critically examine its research base. The Collection will bring these analyses together to consider what the evidence supports and where important uncertainties remain.
The Collection addresses a central question for educators: what justifies adopting, adapting, sustaining, or reconsidering an educational innovation? Its purpose is to connect appraisal of research with informed professional judgment. Authors will examine the relationship between theoretical claims, findings from educational settings, and evidence of wider implementation. They will consider whose learning and participation are represented and how culture, equity, resources, educator preparation, fidelity, and sustainability affect interpretation and application. Attention to limited, mixed, or contested findings will help identify priorities for further inquiry. The shared framework will support dialogue across educational contexts while preserving the distinctions that matter for responsible decisions about practice.
The Collection is restricted to papers developed through the 2026 International Online Symposium on Educational Innovations, with up to 18 potential submissions. Proposed contributions are critical review articles and research syntheses following the book’s chapter format: definition and purpose; historical development and theoretical roots; defining features, models, and intended outcomes; Level I, Level II, and Level III research; implementation, context, equity, and fidelity; future directions; and a conclusion stating an overall judgment and its limits. Topics may concern innovations at any educational level. Participants will circulate complete manuscripts before the symposium, exchange feedback during the event, and revise their work for journal submission. All submissions will be subject to Cogent Education’s independent editorial assessment and peer review.
