Benefits of Publishing in an Article Collection

An Article Collection is an opportunity for your research to reach the right audience. Bringing together the work of the global research community, Collections provide readers with a central place to find the latest research on emerging and important topics. They have been found to increase the discoverability and visibility of each article, as well as article-level citations.

GeoAI and Earth Observation for Climate-Resilient Earth Systems: Monitoring, Modelling and Decision Support

GeoAI and Earth Observation are transforming the monitoring, modelling and management of climate-sensitive Earth systems. The new developments of satellite remote sensing, Geographic Information Systems (GIS), machine learning and deep learning, along with the advancements in environmental modelling can now include the analysis of multi-source geospatial data and provide a platform to enable the identification of environmental changes, prediction of emerging hazards and the assessment of environmental risks associated with climate change. The importance of these approaches is growing with the increasing challenges of floods, droughts, extreme rainfall, land degradation, water insecurity and ecosystem disturbances to sustainable development. The analysis of Earth Observation data together with climate data, hydrological data, ecological data and field observations can enhance the precision, promptness and spatial resolution of environmental assessments. But there are challenges in model interpretability, uncertainty quantification, data integration and in the translation of scientific outputs into decisions for implementation. This Article Collection will discuss innovative applications of GeoAI and Earth Observation to enhance climate resilience and disaster-risk reduction and to further sustainable environmental management. It will inspire interdisciplinary contributions tying technological innovation to practical solutions for resilient earth systems.

The relevance of this topic is the need for timely, accurate and information that is actionable, as climate change and other environmental issues are interconnected. Traditional monitoring and assessment methods can be inadequate to capture complex spatial patterns and rapid environmental changes, especially in terms of interactions between climate, hydrological and ecological processes. The combination of GeoAI and Earth Observation can enhance predictive capacity, enable early detection of risks and aid in evidence-based planning in various geographies. This is especially important for climate vulnerable regions where floods and droughts, water scarcity, land degradation and ecosystem degradation are adversely affecting livelihoods and sustainable resource management. Moreover, explainable models as well as uncertainty assessment and integration of field-based observations are required to make sure that the analytical results are scientifically sound and applicable to the decision-makers. This Article Collection will help foster interdisciplinary research and application supporting climate adaptation, disaster-risk reduction and environmental sustainability, and progress towards Sustainable Development Goals, particularly SDG 13 (Climate Action), SDG 6 (Clean Water and Sanitation), SDG 11 (Sustainable Cities and Communities) and SDG 15 (Life on Land).

This Article Collection will explore the applications of GeoAI and Earth Observation in monitoring, modelling and managing climate-sensitive Earth systems. The main subtopics are:

  • satellite remote sensing and multi-source data integration
  • machine learning and deep learning for environmental analysis
  • climate-change detection
  • flood and drought modelling
  • water-resource assessment
  • ecosystem monitoring
  • land degradation
  • natural hazards
  • explainable AI
  • uncertainty analysis
  • geospatial decision-support systems

The Collection will also be promoted as part of MIP-GIS 2026 on international GIS Day organized by SDG Foundation on 17-18 November 2026, which will be an opportunity for engagement with researchers involved in geospatial innovation and climate resilience efforts. But work from researchers from anywhere in the world will be accepted, not just from the conference participants or from any particular institution. The main objective of the Collection is to foster interdisciplinary Earth-system studies and facilitate climate adaptation and environmental sustainability.
