Benefits of Publishing in an Article Collection
An Article Collection is an opportunity for your research to reach the right audience. Bringing together the work of the global research community, Collections provide readers with a central place to find the latest research on emerging and important topics. They have been found to increase the discoverability and visibility of each article, as well as article-level citations.
Nanoengineered Biomaterials for Functional Tissue Regeneration and Clinical Translation
Tissue regeneration requires biomaterials that do more than providing structural support; they must actively communicate with cells, tissues, and the immune system to guide healing and restore function. Recent advances in nanotechnology have enabled the development of nanoengineered biomaterials with tunable physicochemical, mechanical, biological, and therapeutic properties. These systems can mimic the hierarchical organization of native extracellular matrix, regulate cell adhesion and differentiation, deliver bioactive molecules, and modulate the local microenvironment. Progress in nanofibers, nanoparticles, nanocomposites, injectable hydrogels, self-assembling materials, bioinks, and biomimetic nanovesicles is creating new opportunities for the regeneration of bone, cartilage, skin, nerve, cardiovascular, and other tissues. This Article Collection will highlight emerging nanomedicine strategies that combine materials science, cellular engineering, drug delivery, and regenerative medicine.
The clinical repair of damaged or diseased tissues remains limited by inadequate vascularization, inflammation, infection, fibrosis, poor integration with host tissue, and the inability to reproduce the complex architecture of native organs. Nanoengineered biomaterials may address these challenges by providing spatially and temporally controlled delivery of growth factors, nucleic acids, small molecules, cells, and extracellular-vesicle-inspired therapeutics. In addition, immunomodulatory and stimuli-responsive materials can regulate the healing environment and promote functional rather than scar-mediated repair. However, important challenges remain, including reproducible manufacturing, long-term safety, biodegradation, sterilization, scalability, and translation from small-animal models to clinically relevant systems. Addressing these barriers is essential for developing safe, effective, and commercially viable regenerative nanomedicines. This Collection will encourage research that connects innovative material design with meaningful biological outcomes, robust preclinical validation, and realistic clinical translation.
This Article Collection will cover nanoengineered scaffolds, nano-fibrous / self-assembling biomaterials, injectable / stimuli-responsive hydrogels, nano composites, nanostructured implant surfaces, and hybrid materials for tissue regeneration. Topics of interest include controlled delivery of therapeutic agents, extracellular vesicle and exosome-mimetic systems, immunomodulatory biomaterials, vascularization, antimicrobial regeneration, 3D bioprinting, organoid / tissue-interface engineering, and biosensing approaches for monitoring repair. Studies addressing biomaterial synthesis, cell and molecular mechanisms, biodistribution, nanotoxicology, sterilization, regulatory considerations, and clinical translation are particularly encouraged. The Collection will welcome original research articles, reviews, systematic reviews, and expert perspectives that fit the scope and standards of the International Journal of Nanomedicine.
