The synthesis of bibliographic control and knowledge organization: A Festschrift for Sandy Roe

Sandy Roe served as Editor of Cataloging and Classification Quarterly for a phenomenal 23 years. A journal started in the heyday of academic flowering in librarianship has become one of the premiere repositories of new knowledge in information sharing technologies including: resource description for cultural heritage (libraries, archives, museums), classification and in particular verbal subject representation and facet analysis, indigenous knowledge organization, and many attendant fields. CCQ is one of the most highly cited journals on the science of knowledge organization, ranking second only to the journal KO. Following on the pathway laid by the journal’s second editor, Dr. Ruth Carter (1985-2006), Sandy has shepherded decades of librarian scholars, calling for submissions, chairing a large and diverse editorial board who in turn helped grow the academic circle that is CCQ, and managing the journal at a high level of quality (and keeping its impact factor high) through radically evolutionary periods in the history of scientific and professional research communication.

In addition, Sandy’s leadership of CCQ took place alongside her full career as Senior Cataloging Librarian at Illinois State University, following service with nonprint cataloging at Mankato State University Library in Minnesota. She holds an M.S. in Anthropology from Minnesota State University, Mankato, and an MSLIS from the University of Illinois at Urbana Champaign.

The purpose of this special issue of Cataloging & Classification Quarterly is to honor Sandy Roe by creating a record of the literature of cataloging and classification at this moment in time, reflecting the evolution of the domain across the decades of leadership during Sandy Roe’s tenure as editor. We hope to honor Sandy’s leadership with an anthology of the finest cutting-edge research in cataloging, classification, metadata and knowledge organization, broadly conceived. We intend to create both a monument and a call for action.

The guest editor invites submissions from cataloging and metadata professionals and from researchers and practitioners in related areas from around the globe.
