The Impact of Artificial Intelligence on Tourists’ Destination Choices

Artificial Intelligence (AI) is transforming the tourism industry by reshaping how travelers search for information, receive recommendations, and make destination decisions. From AI-powered chatbots and virtual assistants to personalized travel suggestions and sentiment analysis, AI is influencing every stage of the tourist journey. This special issue seeks to explore the diverse ways in which AI is affecting tourists’ destination choices, traveler behavior, and the strategies of tourism stakeholders worldwide.

Key Questions include:

  • How do AI-driven recommendation systems influence tourists’ destination selection?
  • What is the role of AI-powered virtual assistants, chatbots, and digital influencers in shaping travel preferences?
  • In what ways do personalized marketing and predictive analytics alter tourist decision-making processes?
  • What ethical considerations arise from using AI to influence tourists’ choices (e.g., privacy, bias, manipulation)?
  • How do tourists perceive and trust AI-generated content in travel planning?
  • How do AI applications affect sustainable tourism and lesser-known destinations?
  • What are the implications of AI adoption for destination marketing organizations (DMOs) and travel intermediaries?

This Collection welcomes empirical, theoretical, and review papers, including (but not limited to):

  • AI and tourist behavior: case studies, experiments, and surveys
  • Impacts of AI-driven platforms (e.g., Google, Expedia, TripAdvisor) on destination selection
  • Trust, credibility, and perceived risk in AI-powered travel recommendations
  • Social media algorithms and their influence on destination popularity
  • AI’s role in crisis management (e.g., during pandemics, natural disasters)
  • Cross-cultural differences in AI adoption for travel decisions
  • AI ethics, transparency, and governance in tourism marketing
  • Future trends: Virtual Reality, Metaverse, and AI in experiential tourism

Authors are invited to submit original research articles, reviews, and case studies. Interdisciplinary and cross-sector perspectives are encouraged. For submission instructions, please follow Cogent Social Sciences’ guidelines.
