Eye Tracking Methods and Applications in Occupational Ergonomics and Human Factors
Eye tracking technology has become increasingly accessible and widely adopted as a powerful tool for understanding human behavior, cognition, and performance in occupational settings. From monitoring attention and workload in safety-critical operations to evaluating interface designs and training effectiveness, eye tracking provides unique insights into how workers process information, allocate attention, and interact with complex systems. Despite its growing adoption across diverse occupational domains including healthcare, transportation, manufacturing, human-AI collaboration, training and skill development, and safety management, challenges remain in standardizing methodological approaches, data processing and analysis techniques, and the translation of research findings into practical workplace applications.
This special issue aims to advance the field by bringing together high-quality research that represents best practices in eye tracking methodology and demonstrates innovative applications in occupational contexts. We welcome contributions that address methodological innovations, validation studies, novel applications in emerging work environments, and practical implementations that improve worker safety, performance, and well-being. The goal is to establish exemplars for rigorous eye tracking research and facilitate the effective integration of eye tracking technologies into ergonomics and human factors practice.
What can I contribute?
Submissions are welcome using any of the journal's manuscript types (i.e., Original Research, Methods/Models/Theories, Reviews, Brief Reports, Position Papers, Viewpoints, Historical Perspectives, Emerging Issues, Applications, and Case Reports)
Topics of interest include, but are not limited to:
- Methodological advances in eye tracking data collection, processing, and analysis for occupational settings
- Eye tracking applications in safety-critical work domains (e.g., healthcare, transportation, manufacturing, construction)
- Assessment of cognitive workload, situation awareness, and attentional allocation in operational environments
- Evaluation of human-automation interaction and human-AI collaboration using eye tracking
- Eye tracking for training effectiveness, skill acquisition, and expertise development
- Applications in workplace interface design, usability testing, and human-system integration
- Mobile and wearable eye tracking in naturalistic occupational settings
- Integration of eye tracking with other physiological or behavioral measures
- Validation studies and comparative methodological evaluations
- Case studies demonstrating successful implementation in organizational contexts
- Challenges and solutions for deploying eye tracking in real-world work environments
Methodological diversity is encouraged; relevant papers, including qualitative approaches, action research methodologies, surveys, reviews, computer modeling, technical measurements, and observational approaches, are all invited for submission.
