Assessment in Dance

We use assessment to evaluate student progress, document faculty accomplishment, determine if curriculum is appropriate, and decide how someone should be cast in choreography, along with a host of other practices. It is an essential tool of the dance educator. This special issue of Dance Education in Practice seeks articles pertaining to dance and assessment. Possible topics include, but are not limited to:

  •             Strategies for self-assessment
  • Formative assessments: how to evaluate progress as dance is happening
  • Summative assessments: documenting dance accomplishments at the end of the year
  • Adapting the Danielson Framework for use in the dance classroom
  • Evaluating student teacher readiness
  • Peer assessment of faculty in post-secondary dance
  • Standards based assessment for K-12 dancers
  • Creating and using student crafted rubrics
  • Evaluating independent studio success: when should a dancer move to another level?
  • The role of AI in assessment and evaluation
  • Assessment for casting: how to create auditions for most effective evaluation
  • The politics of assessment: who gets to participate in evaluation?
  • Assessing teaching success and instructor evaluation practices

We encourage authors to share their experiences with our readers. You do not need to be an experienced writer to submit—we mentor authors!

Submission Instructions

Dance Education in Practice considers articles for publication focused on practical approaches to dance education and teaching that provide educators with models of new ideas, strategies, and content they can apply to their own practice, targeted toward dance studio teachers, P-12 dance educators, postsecondary teacher education professionals, teaching artists, and dance education undergraduate and graduate students. Articles will be concise (1000-3000 words) and communicate innovative ideas in a "how to" format. Graphics and pictures will support article content.
